Here are four things to consider before threading a community partner too deeply into your business:

  1. Know your direction: Is the community moving in the same direction that you are moving? It is important to choose your business alliances wisely. All too often, we choose our business associates based on geography or personal relationships and not on what we are trying to achieve. Know your direction and leverage the community to help you meet your objectives. Then together, you will climb higher and faster.
  2. Attitude: Does your community stay positive? Miserable companies do not move forward. Love what you do and do it well. Your allies should help build you up, help you grow, help you become better, and you should do the same for them.
  3. Growth: Great people give back to their community and help where they can. However, when you’re looking at your community partners, make sure they can help you grow and develop as much as you help them. Associate with people that will stretch you and your vision. Be part of a team that expands your depth and breadth within the industry.
  4. Fun: No one is productive in a role that they despise. Being part of the right group of allies helps you see things in a different light. Enjoy what you are doing with enthusiasm or change what you are doing. Life is just too short.
