2024 Year in Review
Securities class actions analysis and 2025 insights
The number of settlements in U.S. securities class actions has risen significantly, reaching a five-year high of 159 in 2024—an increase of 37 settlements (30%) compared to 2020. This upward trend is expected to continue for 2025, with 166 anticipated settlements by year-end, nearly exceeding pre-COVID levels. Alongside this growth, the total aggregate settlement amount rose by 55% from 2020 to 2024, while the median settlement fund increased by 28%.
On the international front, claims filing has been steadily increasing in both claims volume and available recoveries. Despite some growing pains, the potential rewards may soon surpass those seen in the established U.S. securities class action process with many high-impact cases being actively litigated.
This trend is underscored by a sharp rise in investor recoveries for international cases, with payouts reaching $529 million in 2023 and $483 million in 2024—more than four times the total amount distributed in 2022.
