40 Years of Building Technology for Financial Services and Healthcare
March 11, 2026 by Eamonn Greaves
This year marks a significant milestone for SS&C Technologies, as we celebrate 40 years of powering the systems that financial services and healthcare organizations depend on every day.
SS&C’s story begins in 1986 with founder and CEO Bill Stone. At the age of 30, Stone left his role directing financial services consulting at KPMG and serving as vice president of administration and special investment services at a financial services firm to start his own business. Using about $20,000 in personal savings, he launched SS&C from the basement of his home in Windsor, Connecticut, with four employees, focused on developing software solutions for financial institutions, including insurers and asset managers. His early vision was to address inefficiencies in how firms managed data and operations by building technology that was accurate, dependable and responsive to the needs of highly regulated organizations.
From the beginning, Bill Stone emphasized long-term thinking and execution over short-term gains, a mindset that became foundational to how SS&C builds technology, invests in innovation and scales globally.
From those humble beginnings in a basement to a global leader today, SS&C’s journey reflects a clear mandate: build technology that works when it matters most.
As of January 2026, SS&C Technologies trades as SSNC on NASDAQ with a market capitalization of approximately $21 billion US, a testament to sustained growth and investor confidence in the company.
Built to Support Mission-Critical Operations
Over four decades, SS&C has supported front-, middle- and back-office operations across asset management, wealth and retirement services, trading and risk, and healthcare administration. Our platforms help organizations safeguard assets, manage complexity, meet regulatory requirements and operate with confidence through every market cycle.
Scale alone does not define this journey. Trust does.
That trust has been built through sustained innovation and a deliberate approach to growth. Strategic acquisitions, ranging from Chalke and GlobeOp to Advent, Intralinks, Blue Prism and most recently Calastone, were never about expansion for its own sake. Each added new capabilities, deeper expertise or broader connectivity in response to evolving client needs.
Leadership Continuity That Enables Long-Term Thinking
A defining feature of SS&C’s history is leadership continuity. Founded and led for 40 years by CEO Bill Stone, the company has benefited from long-term thinking that prioritizes durability over short-term gain. This continuity has enabled disciplined investment, responsible scaling and enduring partnerships across global financial services and healthcare markets.
The results are tangible, with 27,000 employees worldwide, operations spanning every major financial center and technology that supports mission-critical processes where reliability is non-negotiable. Whether enabling investment accounting, facilitating global fund distribution, automating enterprise workflows or streamlining healthcare administration, SS&C’s platforms are designed to perform reliably, day after day and year after year.
Looking Forward With Confidence
Forty years is a moment to reflect and a moment to look ahead.
Throughout SS&C’s history, the ability to anticipate change and build ahead of it has been a constant. From specialized software to fund administration and outsourcing, SS&C has repeatedly recognized where complexity would shift and invested before those capabilities became industry standards.
That same pattern defines the next chapter. As healthcare and financial services organizations face mounting pressure from data growth, regulation and efficiency demands, automation and AI are reshaping how work gets done. SS&C stands at the forefront of this transformation, applying decades of domain and operational expertise to agentic AI built for mission-critical environments.
Agentic AI represents a shift toward orchestrating work with intelligence, governance and accountability at scale. Deep experience across core workflows uniquely positions SS&C to help clients adopt advanced AI responsibly and with confidence.
Across every phase of its evolution, SS&C has focused on what comes next. That forward-looking discipline continues to guide how the company helps healthcare and financial services organizations operate reliably in an increasingly complex world.
